Urban/Contemporary Gospel Music is a subgenre of gospel music. Some described it as African-American gospel; Its origin could be traced to America during the 1970s.
Already, Americans had hip-hop music as their traditional music genre but the message was not religious. This genre was widely spread throughout the country and even jumping borders. Because of the acceptance and patronage of this hip-hop music by then, Gospel musicians cribbed the elements of the hip-hop, put the message of Jesus Christ, salvation and Christian religion on it to help sell Christ.
It was a mechanism to reach out to the lost. As Jesus dined with sinners to able to preach to them; Matthew 9:12 “On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick“, they could use the genre that had attention to get sinners repented. Meanwhile, it came with myriad of criticism because some felt it was ungodly but that not withstanding, the subgenre travel to many countries of which Ghana is not an exception.
The development of Urban Gospel Music started in Ghana in the late 2000s and just as the replica of what happened in America, the message of Christ was put on rhythms that were used for secular music to promote Christ to non-Christians.
